LSU recruit Craig Loston, who had to take a class over the summer to gain academic eligibility, was cleared to play by the NCAA and joined the Tigers for practice on Monday, the first day of class for LSU.
Loston, originally hailing from Aldine, Texas, had been rated the best high school safety in the Class of 2009 by a number of recruiting websites, including Rivals.com and Scout.com. Along with his defensive skills, he excelled as a kick returner and a receiver at Eisenhower High School.
Head coach Les Miles expects big things from Loston, along with the rest of his freshman class, and couldn’t wait to get Loston onto the practice field.

Coming off the heels of signing a $3 billion TV contract with ESPN in the offseason, was there any doubt that the country loves the SEC?
If so, the first coaches poll of the year released Friday only backs up the public love, with the coaches ranking five SEC teams within the Top 25 (all five come in at #13 or above). Defending national champion Florida leads off the poll at #1, with 53 of the 59 first place votes, while Alabama comes in at #5, LSU at #9, Mississippi at #10 and Georgia at #13.
In other words, if an SEC team ends up in the BCS Championship this year, that team survived an absolute gauntlet.
LSU faces an impossibly difficult two weeks to kick off October, leading the month off with an away game at Georgia. The next week, they return home to welcome Heisman winner Tim Tebow and preseason #1 Florida to the Bayou.
The Tigers play at Alabama on November 7 and at Mississippi two weeks later, on November 21.
Coach Les Miles and LSU welcome new defensive coordinator John Chavis (the former Tennessee D-coordinator) to the mix this season, hoping he can fix the leaky LSU defense from last season. If Chavis figures out a way to stop Tebow and the rest of the SEC, the Tigers’ schedule provides them a realistic shot at the BCS title game.
