Jefferson ready to step up

LSU Tigers quarterback Jordan Jefferson knows he needs to be more of a leader in his junior season.

Jefferson’s shaky play may have cost LSU an SEC championship and maybe even a shot at a national title.

The Tigers defense was very good as usual last season but Jefferson failed to make enough plays in the passing game.

Head coach Les Miles said he thinks Jefferson is maturing and has learned that quarterback is much more than just a position. ( Read More…)

Could Miles leave LSU?

There is a lot of talk and speculation about the future of LSU Tigers head coach Les Miles despite the fact he guided the team to a national championship in his short tenure.

Some believe that the Tigers haven’t lived up to expectations in recent seasons and that Miles is underachieving as the head coach.

Had Miles not guided LSU to a national championship, a lot of people believe that he would no longer be employed as the head coach at the school.

A lot of comparisons have been made between Miles and former LSU head coach Nick Saban, who helped to rebuild the program before heading to the NFL.

LSU falls to Penn State, 19-17

The LSU Tigers were involved in yet another close game, and this one didn’t go their way.

LSU lost to Penn State, 19-17, in an extremely close Capital One Bowl that typified the kind of season the Tigers have had.

The Tigers fell behind early in the game and went into halftime trailing 13-3. However, as they have done all season, they rallied back in the second half and nearly pulled out a victory.

I’m sure head coach Les Miles is feeling some pressure after yet another close loss for his team.

Quarterback Jordan Jefferson threw for 202 yards and a touchdown and an interception as he continues to try and develop into the team’s next star at the position.

Wide receiver Brandon Lefell led the team with five catches for 87 yards and a touchdown. The Tigers will most certainly miss his game-breaking ability next season.

LSU’s top back won’t be back for Capital One Bowl

By Bud L. Ellis

Try as he did, Charles Scott’s LSU football career is over.

The senior tailback, trying to recover from a broken collarbone suffered in early November, will not be able to play for the Tigers in the Capital One Bowl against Penn State on New Year’s Day in Orlando, LSU head coach Les Miles told reporters Tuesday.

Scott, who was hurt in a loss to eventual SEC champion Alabama on Nov. 7, finishes his stellar LSU career ranked seventh in rushing yards in school history with 2,317 yards. His 32 touchdowns stand fourth all-time at LSU.

He totaled 1,174 of those yards and 18 touchdowns during a breakthrough junior season.

LSU goes into the Capital One Bowl matchup with the Nittany Lions undermanned at running back. Keiland Williams (broken ankle) and Richard Murphy (knee injury) also were hurt during November action, and neither one will play against Penn State.

November was a rough month for the Tigers, who suffered two of their three losses this season during the month (to Alabama and Ole Miss). LSU won twice in November, but both were close calls: A 24-16 escape against Louisiana Tech, and a narrow 33-30 overtime thriller over Arkansas.

LSU won’t be fazed by close games … win or lose

By Bud L. Ellis

Twelve little points. That’s why the LSU Tigers are preparing for the Capital One Bowl on New Year’s Day in Orlando, and not setting their sights on a BCS bowl or perhaps even the national championship game.

Yes, just 12 points in a 12-game season, a razor-thin line of demarcation between playing for a SEC or national title, and playing Penn State on the first day of 2010.

Yes, it might be disappointing to think about how close the Tigers came to playing for a title. But at the same time, it illustrates just how good the 9-3 Tigers are, and that certainly has the attention of the Nittany Lions and their legendary coach, Joe Paterno.

When the Tigers and Penn State cross paths in Orlando, it will mark two programs that had national championship aspirations, yet were undone with a couple of losses. And for LSU, those losses were awfully close: a 10-point defeat at home against Florida, a nine-point setback at Alabama and a two-point close call at Ole Miss. No shame in losing any of those contests.

The Tigers bounced back from the Ole Miss loss with a narrow 33-30 overtime victory over Arkansas to conclude the regular season. A close game isn’t going to faze this squad: In addition to the three losses, five of LSU’s victories were by 10 points or less.

And certainly, others are noticing the good work being done in Baton Rouge. In the past week, the Tigers have hired away new assistant coaches from SEC rivals: Frank Wilson, who leaves Tennessee to become running backs coach, and Billy Gonzalez, who departs from Florida to serve as head coach Les Miles’ passing game coordinator and receivers coach.

LSU aims for 10-win season against Penn State at Capital One Bowl

By Bud L. Ellis

Not only did Josh Jasper’s two late field goals propel LSU to an overtime victory over Arkansas in the regular-season finale, it sent the Tigers to Orlando for New Year’s.

The 13th-ranked Tigers will take on No. 11 Penn State in the Capital One Bowl on New Year’s Day at Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium, as the Tigers aim to win their 10th game of what’s been an up-and-down season.

LSU carried dreams of playing for a national championship into this season, and 21 points stood between the Tigers and a perfect season. But despite a nine-point loss to Alabama, a 10-point setback against Florida and a two-point defeat to Ole Miss, the Tigers nonetheless rallied to put together another solid season.

The bowl marks just the second time in history the Tigers have faced Penn State. The Nittany Lions beat LSU 16-9 in the Orange Bowl after the 1973 season.

The Tigers hope for better results this time around against Penn State, and better results this time around in Orlando. In LSU’s last appearance in the Capital One Bowl, the Tigers suffered a heartbreaking 30-25 loss to Iowa.

LSU also played in the Capital One Bowl in 1979, beating Wake Forest 34-10 in a game that at the time was called the Tangerine Bowl.

Looking for a good bowl trend? LSU is 4-0 in bowl games under head coach Les Miles, and the Tigers have scored 157 points in those four contests.

LSU falls apart at finish, falls at Ole Miss

By Bud L. Ellis

Close losses to each of the top two ranked teams in the nation can be disappointing to accept.

But LSU losing to unranked Ole Miss as time ran out with the ball on the Rebels’ 6? That’s one that will take a while for the Tigers to get over, LSU losing 25-23 as all chaos broke loose on the Tigers’ sidelines in the final minute.

LSU’s coaching staff couldn’t decide what plays to call in the critical final minutes. The Tigers lost valuable time trying to call timeout, and couldn’t get lined up at the 6 before time expired.

It’s a bitter defeat for a program that only had lost close decision to top-ranked Florida and second-ranked Alabama. LSU, which was seeking to finish with just the two losses, held a 17-9 lead against the Rebels midway through the second quarter. Then Ole Miss scored 16 unanswered points to build a 25-17 lead.

LSU pulled within 25-23 on a Jordan Jefferson 25-yard touchdown pass to Rueben Randal with 1:17 left. But the two-point conversion attempt failed.

The Tigers recovered the onside kick and moved downfield, but poorly managed the clock and ran out of time.

LSU falls to Alabama, 24-15

The No. 9 LSU Tigers came up a little bit short in a 24-15 loss to the No. 3 Alabama Crimson Tide.

The Tigers looked to be in pretty good position early in the game until an injury to quarterback Jordan Jefferson.

After the injury to Jefferson, the Tigers stood no chance of moving the football against the stingy Alabama defense.

LSU actually held a four-point lead at halftime and extended it to five entering the fourth quarter, but Alabama scored 14 unanswered points to end the game.

The loss eliminates LSU from SEC championship contention as well as dashes any remaining hopes of a run to the national championship.

No SEC title game berth, but LSU still has plenty on line

By Bud L. Ellis

They won’t spend the first Saturday in December playing for the SEC championship, but there still is plenty at stake for the LSU Tigers in 2009.

The Tigers fought hard in Saturday’s SEC West showdown in Tuscaloosa, but couldn’t hold onto a slim lead early in the fourth quarter and fell to Alabama, 24-15.

Now that it’ll be the Crimson Tide playing Florida for the conference championship inside the Georgia Dome Dec. 5 — with the winner likely moving into the BCS title game — the Tigers are left to look ahead.

It’s not as gloomy as things appear.

LSU’s only losses this season are to the Gators and Tide, the top two teams in the nation. At 7-2 on the season and ranked No. 9, the Tigers still have a shot at a 10-win season and a good bowl game.

But work remains to be done. This week’s contest against Louisiana Tech doesn’t figure to be much more than a tune-up for the Tigers, but conference games at Ole Miss and at home against Arkansas will be challenging.

If the Tigers are up to those challenges, though, LSU will end the regular season at 10-2, and will be an attractive pick for one of the SEC-aligned bowl games. It’s likely the loser of the SEC title game will land in the Sugar Bowl, but there are plenty of nice options for an LSU team that can run the table from here on out.

LSU tries to focus on Tulane as Crimson Tide, title dreams loom

By Bud L. Ellis

One Alabama team beaten … one Alabama team left on the schedule.

Sure, the LSU football schedule tells us the Tigers take on Tulane this Saturday. And sure, everybody associated with the program will tell us the focus is on the Green Wave and this week’s game.

Yeah, right.

LSU, which trounced Auburn 31-10 Saturday, travels to No. 2-ranked Alabama on Nov. 7 for a game that more than likely will determine which team takes on top-ranked Florida in the SEC Championship Game, Dec. 5 at the Georgia Dome.

For the ninth-ranked Tigers, it would mark a second shot at the Gators, who handed LSU its only loss of the season 13-3 on Oct. 10. Run the table and down the Gators in the SEC title contest, and LSU could find itself playing for the national championship in the BCS title game.

But there is work to be done between now and then. A trip to No. 25 Mississippi and a home game with Arkansas also remain on the schedule.

What’s on the schedule this week looks like a tune-up. Tulane is just 2-5 on the season and has allowed 36.7 points per game this season, good news for an LSU offense that rolled up 376 yards of total offense in the rout of Auburn.
